Blurry Vision

I remember when I had just turned 40, and I opened up the phone book to read someone’s phone number. (Yes, that dates me—we don’t have those anymore, do we?) Anyway, I tried and tried, but I could not focus my eyes enough to read the number.

I had blurry vision.

So, I figured I might need glasses, and I made an appointment with the eye doctor.

Yep, I needed reading glasses. But then he positioned me so that I could look out a far window. I could see the trees and cars. Then he placed some lenses in front of my eyes and had me look again.

Wow! I could see individual leaves. I could see details that I hadn’t even realized I was missing.

Have you considered that we might have blurry vision when it comes to spiritual things? And just like I didn’t realize I needed a distance prescription, we may not realize that our spiritual eyesight is actually blurry.

What do we do about that? How do we fix it?

First, let’s go to the Source and ask for help. Ask the Lord Jesus to show you where your vision is blurry. Ask Him to fill you with the Holy Spirit so that you can have clear vision about His truth. Ask for your will to be humbled before Him—to want what He wants, to hate what He hates, and to love what He loves.

Second, we need light.

As I get older, I have noticed that when I turn on more lights in the room, I can see better. There’s something scientific there, but I digress.

Where will we get the light?

Well, we probably all recognize Psalm 119:105, which says, “Your word is a lamp to my feet
and a light to my path.”

God’s Word gives us the light we need to see.

But look at verse 130.

“The unfolding of your words gives light;
it imparts understanding to the simple.”

That’s what I want. The unfolding of God’s Word. Understanding for the simple.

And that takes time.

Think about the meaning of the unfolding of God’s Word. It doesn’t happen overnight. I have to dig into God’s Word. I have to compare verses with other verses to understand their meaning. Sometimes I have to ask those who know the Bible better than I do to help me understand what God’s Word says.

Blurry vision.

We all have it—in some areas of our lives.

Take some time today to pray about yours. Ask the Lord where your vision might be blurry. Then consider: When can you make time for the unfolding of His Word? When can you sit in its light long enough to begin seeing what you may not even realize you’ve been missing?

Ask God how to proceed.

He will show you.
